Increase Access to Nutritious & Affordable Food
We want to change the way the food system works. Everyone should have access to healthy food, regardless of income. This is called "food justice" - the belief that healthy food is a human right. Our current food system is failing to provide low-income people with the healthy foods they need to thrive. We are working to connect low income families with access to healthy, fresh produce.
Current Projects:
- Working in Conjunction with the Campus Kitchen at Gettysburg College to pilot the The Fair Project in June 2011, a food gap voucher program designed to provide 25 families, whose income is between 160%-250% of the FIPG, with $40 in monthly vouchers for use at the Adams County Farm Fresh Markets.
- Collaborating with the Adams County Farmers' Market Association to promote an Electronic Benefit Machine (EBT) for use at the markets at the Rec Park the Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg.
- Collaborating with the Adams County Farmers' Market Association, Healthy Adams County and local businesses to
implement a Double Dollars Program for SNAP recipients at the
Adams County Farm Fresh Markets.
- Updating initial research and rewriting Closing the Food Gap in Adams County.
- Research, graph and make a video demonstrating the food gap created by the drop-off of welfare benefits.
- Writing grant proposals to enhance the work of the Food Policy Council.
